BREAKING NEWS: Brush Fires Force Mandatory Evacuations in Riverhead

Firefighters Battle Brush Fires Throughout Tri-State

Firefighters are battling major brush fires throughout the tri-state area.

On Long Island, a brush fire erupted at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory. Some 2,000 acres, including 300 acres at the lab site, were reported burning.

Riverhead Police ordered a mandatory evacuation in part of the area, north to Grumman Avenue, east to Edwards Avenue, south to Peconic Avenue and west to Wading River Manor. The Riverhead Senior Center at 201 Howell Ave. has been established as an emergency shelter in the town.
